STUDENT-ATHLETE OMAR AZAB CLAIMS MEDAL AT ASIAN AGE GROUP AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Omar Azab claimed Qatar’s only medal at the 12th Asian Age Group Aquatics Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.

The student-athlete, who is set to join Grade 10 in the new academic year, won silver in the 50m breaststroke for the 13-to 14-year-old category.

He was one of four Aspire Academy swimmers chosen by the Qatar Swimming Association to compete at the championships alongside Adam Morsy and two recent graduates, Hamza Shalan and Mohamed Ismail Aziz Jelany.

All four swimmers put in some outstanding performances, reaching finals in various events across the age groups.

In the 17-to 18-year-old category, Mohamed Ismail Aziz Jelany managed 5th and 6th in the finals of the 100m and 50m butterfly respectively, while breaststroke specialist Hamza Shalan was 6th in the 200m and 8th in the 100m.

There was agony for Adam Morsy in two of the breaststroke finals for the 15-16 age group as he finished 4th in the 100m and 200m events; he also reached the final of the 50m race, finishing 8th.
