Sopot, 24 June 2019. Qatar’s high jump world champion and Aspire Academy-graduate Mutaz Essa Barshim made a roaring return to action after a year-long injury layoff on Sunday, June 23rd, leaping to 2.27m to win the high jump event at Sopot Grand Prix Athletics in Sopot, Poland.
Yesterday’s event was his first since he suffered injury at the Gyulai Memorial in Székesfehérvár, Hungary, last July. The two-time Olympic medalist returned to training just over two months ago and decided against competing at the Asian Athletics Championships, which took place in Doha in April.
The 2017 IAAF Athlete-of-the-Year and the Rio Olympics silver medalist will be looking to improve his performances ahead of the World Championships, which will take place in Doha from September 28-October 6.
