The goal of the Sports Nutrition Unit is to enhance performance, ensure optimal growth and maintain health of ASPIRE student-athletes through nutritional care and support.

Nutritional care and support for individual athletes:
  • All student-athletes complete a comprehensive nutrition assessment annually
  • The nutrition assessment together with the information from the medical and sports science testing is used to advise each student on his nutritional needs.
  • Students with special medical dietary needs are advised and supported to make the correct food choices

  • Regular hydration testing is conducted and student-athletes advised and encouraged to ensure good hydration at all times.
  • Sports dietitians are available to assist student athletes with individual nutritional concerns at any time
Nutritional care and support for teams and groups:
  • Pre-training or game and nutritional recovery snacks are arranged for all teams and groups.
  • Sports dietitians ensure that the correct sports drinks are available at all training and games or competitions.
  • Sports dietitians liaise with hotels and other food service providers to ensure that all food is Halal and that nutritional needs are met when on camps and travelling. Where possible, sports dietitians accompany student-athletes to camps and competitions
Nutrition education:
  • Formal nutrition education sessions are delivered for students, staff and parents.
  • Informal education is delivered at various times through the day such as in the cafeteria and on the field
  • Supplement use and anti-doping education are an important part of the ASPIRE programme.
Research:

  • Sports dietitians undertake research projects to support their work and the advice given.
  • Research projects, such as energy intake and hydration measuring and monitoring during Ramadan, give useful information on how to manage performance nutrition during such times.
